Patrick Battstone, pianist

Pianist Pat Battstone ( of Draper Labs ) will be playing a one hour jazz concert at Killian Hall on Oct 10th as part of MIT’s Artist Behind the Desk series. He will be joined by bassist Jon Dreyer, and together they will be playing a mixture of jazz standards from the Monk and Bill Evans repertoire as well as original compositions.

Kurt Winikka, Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist

A returning veteran disappears into a Midwest landscape of night trains, truck stops, and prairie fires. A former baseball star fades into the tattered memories of his dreams. A holy roller faces judgment for a life of hypocrisy. These are the folks who inhabit the songs of Kurt Winikka. Growing up in the Southwest, raising a family in the Midwest, and finding his bearings as a singer/songwriter in New England, Kurt meticulously crafts engaging narratives informed by the breadth of his American experience, and conveys them with precise guitar work and a dulcet voice.
In his teens, at the same time Kurt was playing in a terrible (though extremely loud) garage band, he was opening his ears to a wide range of musical influences from Mahler to Mingus. Ultimately it was songwriters like Harry Chapin who held sway; writers who could weave an engaging narrative into a simple song and provide a deep connection to our human condition. The influence of writers such as Bill Morrissey, Richard Shindell and Guy Clark can be heard in his songwriting.
“Says the Rain” is Winikka’s second CD, co-produced with Lloyd Maines in Jamaica Plain Massachusetts and Austin Texas. A fortuitous meeting at the Kerrville Folk Festival in the Texas Hill Country led to the collaboration between the two. Joining Kurt on the recordings are Lloyd Maines, Pat Manske, Richard Bowden, Joel Guzman, Riley Osbourn, and Terri Hendrix. The collection of eleven original songs and one traditional song will be released in March 2013.

Gabriel Zucker

Pianist and composer Gabriel Zucker will be performing a pair of ambitious piano sonatas, in advance of a solo program in New York. Part one of the program is Charles Ives’ famous “Concord” Sonata, a four-movement musical treatment of the Transcendentalist movement in Concord, Massachusetts. Part two is the world premiere of Zucker’s new work for piano, inspired by Ives and a variety of jazz piano traditions.

Amanda Casale and Dynamic Range Flyleaf Theater

Amanda Casale, Jen Drummond, Jess Andra, Pat Lawrence, Dan Sullivan, Ken Orben, James Haupt, Denys Godwin, Ryan LaForest, and David Nicholson in a theatrical voice recital.

This recital celebrates the “Coming of Spring”, with our three large group numbers representing the change of the seasons: “Seasons of Love”, “I Feel So Much Spring”, and “Song of Purple Summer”. The songs begin dark, lost, and even in some cases cold, like the “Winter”. As the recital progresses, the emotions progress to much happier and satisfying themes – representing the hope and light that comes from Summer. The styles of song and show selections are vastly different, to also showcase many different musicals and their genres.

Molly Ruggles

Molly Ruggles, singer songwriter, writes about almost anything including MIT, deep sea fishing, and the impossibility of perfection.
She will be joined by student and colleague guest artists, and the event promises a range of lively music
